New Zealand Study Routes, Applications and Budget

Planning to study in New Zealand from Hong Kong? Start with your current school year, intended qualification, English level and total budget. Secondary school, university and vocational routes have different entry requirements; the right starting point depends on your previous studies and goals.

Which New Zealand study route fits your plans?

New Zealand study options
Secondary school Years 9–13 form the secondary stage. Compare subject choices, the qualification offered, English support and accommodation at each school.
University study Check the entry requirements for the specific degree, including accepted school qualifications, prerequisite subjects and English evidence.
Vocational or applied study Compare the qualification level, course content, awarding institution and any progression arrangements. A pathway does not automatically guarantee a university place.
English preparation Check whether a language course is standalone or linked to an academic offer, and what result is required to progress.

What should you prepare before applying?

  1. Shortlist institutions by course, location and intended start date.
  2. Prepare recent transcripts, qualification results, passport details and any requested English evidence. Ask about certified translations and subject prerequisites.
  3. Check application deadlines, assessments, available places and the time needed for accommodation and visa arrangements.
  4. Read the offer conditions, payment schedule and refund terms before accepting.

How much should you budget?

Request a written quote in New Zealand dollars (NZD) for your actual academic year or course dates. Separate tuition from accommodation, meals, insurance, transport, learning materials and application charges. A published example is not a personalised quotation. The official cost guide below is a starting point for comparing living expenses.

Accommodation and student visa planning

Ask the institution about homestay, boarding or other approved arrangements, including holiday periods and support for younger students. Check who is responsible for student care and emergency contact arrangements.

For a Fee Paying Student Visa, check the official offer, funding, insurance and other eligibility requirements. Immigration New Zealand recommends applying at least three months before travel. Any permission to work depends on the visa conditions; it should not be assumed when budgeting.

Can I apply without an English test?

There is no single rule for every school and course. Ask the institution which evidence it accepts and whether assessment, language preparation or a conditional offer is available for your circumstances.
