OSSD Online Course Checklist for Hong Kong Students

Before choosing an OSSD online course, ask for a written study plan based on your current qualifications and university goals. Compare the credits you still need, class schedules, total fees and application deadlines.

One course or a complete diploma?

Completing a single course does not mean you have met all the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Ask the receiving school to assess your transcripts and explain the requirements that apply to your entry cohort and circumstances. Consult the official Ontario diploma requirements before confirming a plan.

Prepare for a credit assessment

Bring recent transcripts, completed subjects, your current school year, any translations requested by the school, your intended completion date and a shortlist of university programmes. Ask for a written list of recognised credits, outstanding subjects and other requirements. If you plan to continue studying for the HKDSE or another qualification, check whether your current school accepts the proposed credits and whether you can manage both programmes alongside each other.

Six checks before enrolling

  1. Teaching and records: verify the school’s legal name, school number and current authority to grant the relevant credits. Identify who issues transcripts, holds student records and awards the diploma. A school number alone is not proof of current credit-granting authority.
  2. Class times in Hong Kong: obtain live-class times, recording arrangements and expected weekly study hours. Check seasonal time-zone changes.
  3. Assessment: ask about assignments, tests, final assessments, academic integrity and missed-assessment procedures.
  4. Teacher support: confirm contact channels, response times and feedback arrangements.
  5. Total fees: obtain tuition by course and identify applicable application, materials, reassessment, transcript and other charges. Check currency, payment dates and refund terms.
  6. Reporting dates: compare expected course completion with university deadlines and confirm how interim and final results will be sent.

Work backwards from university prerequisites

Check each university programme’s official requirements for qualifications, subjects, grades and English proficiency. Then plan the order of courses with the school. A fast completion date is of little help if your plan omits a required subject. Meeting diploma requirements does not guarantee admission.

Ask each school for a written study plan

Use the same format for every school: recognised credits, outstanding courses, other graduation requirements, estimated start and completion dates, all applicable fees and transcript arrangements. This helps families compare the full plan rather than a single-course price.

Questions families often ask

Is online OSSD study suitable for every HKDSE student?

Suitability depends on your current year, subjects, university goals, English proficiency and available time. Switching from the HKDSE to the OSSD requires a different plan from studying for both qualifications at the same time.

Is the OSSD exam-free?

Do not assume that it is. Check course assessment and applicable provincial graduation requirements before enrolling.

How can ISSCC help?

ISSCC provides course advice and application support. The teaching school decides credit recognition, teaching, grades and diploma eligibility. Explore OSSD online course advice and Canadian study pathways, then book an OSSD consultation and bring your recent transcripts.
