Other Information: ROBERT LAND ACADEMY in Ontario, Canada, is a specialized military-style boarding school for young men in Grade 6-12 (the qualifying year for university entrance). The Academy is located in the Niagara Peninsula approximately 60 minutes south of Toronto and 35 minutes from the U.S.-Canadian border. Founded in 1978 the success of Robert Land Academy’s program led to steady growth and today serves approximately 125 cadets yearly, with over 3000 alumni. Robert Land Academy enrols approximately 125 young men each year in Grades 6 through 12. Eighty percent come from across Canada, with the remaining 20 percent coming from the United States, Germany, Hong Kong, Mexico, Taiwan, China, The Caribbean and elsewhere around the globe. They represent a broad diversity of racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. The school year is divided into two semesters extending from September to June, and includes breaks in December and March. The rigorous academic program meets and exceeds the requirements of the Ontario Ministry of Education. A strong focus on foundational skills applied in academic courses provides students with opportunities for Canadian and world wide university and college entrance. One academic credit reflects 110 hours of instruction per subject. The Academy also offers foundational courses in English and Math for grades 6-10 which reflect 220 hours of instruction. These remedial courses allow boys who are behind in core subjects to make significant gains and catch up academically. Most students take eight courses over the year, while seniors are encouraged to take six. Classes are small, with a 14:1 student-teacher ratio. Tutorials are held on a regular basis. Course work emphasizes the development of strong basic skills in reading, writing, and study techniques, which are applied and reinforced in all disciplines. Robert Land Academy offers a demanding academic program that is as rigorous as the training and physical education components. Small classes and a low student to faculty ratio allow for close, personal interaction. Remedial assistance, supervised mandatory study halls and tutorials are an integral part of daily routine. The school year is divided into two semesters from September to June. Academic courses are offered in accordance with government guidelines and are subject to Ontario Ministry of Education inspections. The Academy offers credit courses leading to the granting of the Ontario Graduation Diploma. This government issued diploma is recognized by universities and colleges throughout North America and Europe. Each credit requires 110 hours of scheduled instruction. Students normally take eight credits during the course of an academic year. At the senior graduating level, a full-time program normally consists of six grade 12 or pre-university courses. All courses are offered at the advanced or academic level and all courses reflect traditional subjects and disciplines. Classes are small and average 15 pupils. Tutorials are conducted during week days and weekends. Mandatory structured study halls are conducted each evening. All courses emphasize the development of strong basic skills in reading, writing, and study techniques.
