Other Information: As one of the leading independent schools in the North West, richness, through breadth of experience and depth of study, is our goal. At Rydal Penrhos School you will find a broad and balanced learning programme which caters for a wide range of abilities and interests. We care for the individual and are able to tailor the curriculum to suit diverse needs. Our curriculum also allows for increasing choice and specialisation as pupils move through the school. In the Sixth Form we offer two separate qualification types: A-levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma (the ‘IB’). We aim to engender a love of learning and an ability to study independently. These are life skills which will live with our pupils long after they have left school. Coming to study abroad is a daunting prospect, but at Rydal Penrhos our overseas pupils are fully integrated to ensure that they become active members of the school community right from the start. They are welcomed into the same boarding houses, the same competitive houses and the same tutor groups as every other pupil in the school. There is a strong pastoral care framework in place to help all pupils with any issues they may face during their time here. Our houseparents provide invaluable support to boarders, and form tutors are on hand to help with any academic concerns. The Health Centre also plays a vital role in keeping pupils happy and healthy while they are away from home. We embrace pupils from all countries and believe that our school community of 25 different nationalities provides a great opportunity for pupils and staff alike to learn more about the many cultures represented in the school. Rydal Penrhos was founded in the Methodist tradition and a Christian ethos is at the heart of school life, however we welcome pupils from all faiths or none, and value this diversity. Lower School - Years 7-8 (ages 11-13): Rydal Penrhos School is a school for pupils from age to 11 – 18: Years 7-8 sit in the middle of this programme, bridging a gap from primary schooling to the public examinations of GCSE and beyond. More opportunities and greater challenges are gradually introduced in the Lower School and specialist teachers are used at every stage and we aim at this stage to inspire a love of learning. Middle School - Years 9-11 (ages 13-16): Rydal Penrhos provides a splendid GCSE programme, with breadth of choice and an ability to cater for pupils of all abilities. With a commitment to academic excellence at its heart, the Rydal Penrhos curriculum also delivers a vibrant and inspiring extra-curricular programme. International pupils – the Pre-Sixth: The Pre-Sixth is a one year course for pupils for whom English is not their first language. Successful completion of the course should be ideal preparation for Sixth form study at Rydal Penrhos School; both A-level and International Baccalaureate. Please refer to the Pre-Sixth Curriculum Handbook which can be found opposite. Sixth form - Years 12-13 (ages 16-18): The Sixth form at Rydal Penrhos School provides a superb post-16 education in an environment which marries the best of the support structure, familiarity and leadership opportunities of a school setting with the difference and independence of a college setting. Furthermore we offer a broad selection of courses within either the A-level or International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum.
