Abbotsholme caters for a broad ability range. Academic standards are high with the majority of Sixth Formers going on to their first choice university, including Oxford and Cambridge. The curriculum at Abbotsholme aims to develop critical and creative thinking and self-discipline. We encourage our pupils to find their own strengths and preferred methods of learning but within a structured and supportive framework. A staff:pupil ratio of around 1:15 enables teachers to give the attention each student needs. In addition, the tutorial system at Abbotsholme ensures that each pupilíŽs progress is continuously monitored, in terms of effort and achievement, with regular communication between tutor, pupil and parent. A flexible system of sets and options ensures that all pupils are taught in small classes and progress at a pace which is appropriate to them. By the time they enter into the Sixth Form, students have developed a self-motivated academic discipline and a balanced approach to broader aspects of learning. As a result, the transition to Higher Education is for many a natural progression, with the foundation of independent study already in place. Pupils from overseas are a valued part of the Abbotsholme community. They are fully integrated into the student body and participate in both the mainstream curriculum and the extensive extra-curricular activity timetable. Non-native speakers are offered language support throughout their time at Abbotsholme. There are regular excursions focusing on exposure to British culture, as well as meetings with overseas students from neighbouring schools. The I.G.C.S.E. in English as a Second Language is offered to foreign students entering Years 10 and 11. Those entering the Sixth Form are coached for the I.E.L.T.S. exam in Academic English. All Abbotsholme students are fully supported throughout the University application process. In the last three years, of our foreign students wishing to study at university level in an English-speaking country, 100% were accepted and took up their chosen degree course. This year our E.A.L. students have taken up places in universities across the United Kingdom and in Australia.
