Other Information: Top 10 High School in Vancouver Until the mid-fifties, University Hill School was situated on the site of the present elementary school on Chancellor Boulevard. In 1954, the Acadia Road building welcomed its first students, with additional facilities opening in 1957. In those days, the graduating classes numbered about 25. Today, that number is about 125. Located on the UBC Endowment Lands, adjacent to Pacific Spirit Regional Park, University Hill Secondary offers the benefits of a naturally beautiful forested setting with outdoor learning and recreational opportunities. University Hill Secondary is a unique school in a number of respects. At 530 students, we are one of the smallest schools in the Vancouver District, which assumed responsibility for the school in 1969. University Hill takes pride in its traditions of excellence and service. Our school traditions and culture are characterized by a strong commitment to academics and a record of active participation in the fine and performing arts, and athletics. University Hill Secondary ranks among the top academic schools in the province and consistently performs extremely well in relation to other British Columbia schools. University Hill Secondary's colours are purple and teal, and we have two logos. One is historical, with UHS on a traditional shield; the other is contemporary, a stylized hawk symbolizing our affinity with nature and commitment to action. The school is situated in a naturally beautiful setting of lush forest, which provides a tranquil and inspirational learning environment. With the approval of the Principal, Grade 12 students may take seven courses and a study if they are enroled in four of the following: Biology 12, Chemistry 12, Calculus 12, English Literature 12, French 12, Geography 12, Writing 12, Law 12, Mathematics 12, Physics 12, Spanish 12. PE is compulsory for all students in Grades 8, 9, and 10, unless medically excused, and is an elective (optional) course in Grades 11 and 12. A student requiring an exemption from PE is to present a letter from the family doctor to the Administration. Students are expected to wear a T-shirt, shorts, and running shoes for PE.
