Other Information: Oswestry School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for pupils between the ages of 4 and 18. Founded in 1407, it is one of the oldest non-denominational schools in England and stands on the edge of the attractive market town of Oswestry on the border of England and Wales. It is set in 50 acres of its own grounds and boasts some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain on its doorstep. Historical it may be, with many traditional virtues encouraged, but Oswestry is also a warm, caring and progressive school which constantly evolves with the times. It is within this environment that pupils follow the school’s motto: “We learn not for school but for life”. Our ethos Every Oswestrian is encouraged not only to discover the areas in which they excel, but to fulfil their potential in the field to which they are naturally drawn. The school does not focus on any one particular discipline – whether it be academic, sports, drama or music – but encourages pupils, whatever their level of talent, to make the most of their abilities with the help and support of an excellent team of staff. As such our pupils are bright, energetic, confident and above all happy. The size of the school helps us achieve our ethos. We are large enough to grant our pupils a feeling of independence and to house many superb facilities, but small enough for each pupil to be well known and make a significant contribution. A combination of the school’s size and a high teacher-per-student ratio allows us to give a high level of individual care and attention, and to monitor and motivate pupils as they make academic and personal progress. An all-round education We are extremely proud of the excellent academic results achieved given our non-selective admission process. A-levels for the last two years have had a 97-100% pass rate and around 90% of GCSE grades were A-C. Teaching of the highest standard takes places in classrooms benefiting from the latest technology. Education is not restricted to the classroom however, and there are a wide variety of sports to suit everyone, overseen and helped by first-class coaching. Extensive playing fields, gymnasium, netball/tennis courts and a heated indoor swimming pool are some of the sporting environments at Oswestry. The school enjoys a proud tradition of music and drama, and art has always been a popular pastime for Oswestrians with several exhibitions held each year. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and the Combined Cadet Force offer opportunities to develop leadership skills, self-reliance and responsibility. A wealth of activities, trips and expeditions play a central role in broadening our pupils’ experience. Oswestry School's Sixth Form is not merely an extension of the Upper School, but a unique leap into adulthood. With more opportunity, freedom and a totally different atmosphere, the Sixth Form provides students with an ideal learning environment in which to prepare for the world outside. Oswestry School aims to enable each individual to achieve their potential. Progress and achievement is carefully monitored in small tutor groups. Excellent teaching delivered by highly qualified and experienced staff is allied to an effective tutorial programme and provides a sound preparation for university life. In the Sixth Form most students study four AS levels in the Lower Sixth and three of these are taken to A2 level in the Upper Sixth, providing a total of three full A levels and one AS level. Students may, of course, study up to five or six A level subjects if this is appropriate and desirable. The School's A level results are first class, with the majority of leavers proceeding to degree courses at top universities. There is a long standing tradition of entry to Oxford and Cambridge. We pride ourselves on the fact that careful and considered advice is given to ensure passage to the next appropriate stage. We provide every opportunity to succeed. The Sixth Form is regarded as an essential transition between school and either university or the ‘world of work'. Students are therefore encouraged to develop the habits of independent study and enquiry. There are purpose-built boarding houses for both girls and boys to assist with this passage in a structured environment. Their facilities are separate from those of the rest of the School.
