Other Information: Tilton School was founded in 1845 as a secondary school for boys and girls. Both dormitory students and day students were accepted. About 76 boys and girls formed the first student body. Two buildings, a boarding house and a classroom building were built for the School in Northfield, NH, which is just across the Winnipesaukee River from the present campus. The Tilton School curriculum follows the design principles of a nationally recognized educational framework known as Understanding by Design (UbD) (Wiggins and McTighe, ASCD). These principles call for first identifying the long-term Enduring Understandings that students should gain and then determining the essential questions which will help students to discover those understandings. We then design assessments, or methods of measuring learning, which will let us know when students have achieved those understandings. At Tilton, we believe in an integrated teaching approach that is both cross-discipline and grade-specific. The Grade Level Programs bring teams of teachers together with students to solve problems, think deeply and work together to navigate their world with character and vision. Grade level teams have been established at all levels within the school with the goal of providing consistent and effective planning and operational vehicles for faculty who work with students at various developmental levels within the school. Grade level teams are also designed to promote collaboration and a shared focus on the themes and critical events/activities that characterize each grade level. Each grade level culminates with a significant performance moment in which students demonstrate in authentic ways the skills and knowledge that they have mastered during the course of the year. For each of these performances, students are required to meet specific standards of mastery and competence in order to successfully complete their program for the school year, be promoted to the next grade level, and in the case of seniors and PGs, earn a Tilton School diploma.
