Other Information: Kelston Girls' began life in 1954 as a school for girls and boys. It grew so rapidly that by 1959 the students were segregated on separate campuses and in 1963 Kelston Girls' was officially established. Kelston Girls' is the only Waitakere city state girls' school. It has a strong tradition of excellence in academic, cultural and sporting endeavours of which students, staff and alumni are justifiably proud. The original wooden panelled corridors of the school remain but much else has changed. The school is located in Auckland, a city of 1,000,000 population, and is close to major bus and train routes into the central city. The school has English as a Second Language programmes staffed by qualified teachers. Classes are designed to meet the learning needs of students. These classes are available for all mainstream international students. There is no extra charge for these classes. All Year 9 and 10 students receive training in ICT skills. Study in all seven curriculum areas is compulsory in Year 9. At senior school,NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) Levels 1, 2 and 3 and Integrated Studies are available. English and Mathematics are compulsory at Years 11 and 12. Multi level learning is supported. At Years 12 and 13, courses that operate for semesters of two terms are available e.g. presentation and personal grooming / budgeting and money matters / preparation for work. These courses all offer Unit Standards. Year 14 catch up classes are available for students who need to complete Achievement Standards or Literacy and Numeracy Level 1 and 2, before joining University or a course in the second half of the year. This is a much cheaper option than doing a Foundation course at a tertiary institution.
