Other Information: Established in 1918, Chilton Saint James School is a prestigious, traditional, independent all girls' school. Chilton Saint James School is an independent school for girls aged from preschool to senior secondary levels. In New Zealand, government schools are known as state schools and private schools are known as independent schools. International students are required to pay for their education in both state and independent schools. The New Zealand Government does not subsidise the education of overseas students. Our aim at Chilton is to give all students a broad, well-balanced education. International students receive all their lessons with New Zealanders except for extra English (ESOL) which is provided as part of the Tuition Fee. The aim of ESOL is to accelerate international students into the mainstream English programme. The international student programme may include at least three lessons per week of ESOL. This will either be delivered ‘one on one' or as part of a small group. Secondary schooling at Chilton starts at Year 7 (age 11). The learning needs of each international student will be individually assessed when she enters the School. For senior students who have the necessary academic knowledge, the Chilton 18-month International Academic Programme is a University Foundation programme that students study alongside New Zealand students. This offers a fast pathway to university. The International Academic Programme is scheduled from July to December of the following year. Successful graduates can proceed directly to University study after the summer break.
